shade can’t be this cool – p02/52

One of Fort Lauderdale’s finest, DJ Shade doing his thing.  Sometimes the best camera is the one you have with you.  I’ve been really working with light lately, learning a lot more, and I just loved the way this looked.

Exif data on this one: iPhone 4.

cut like a razor – P01/52

with one comment

my buddy eddie b challenged me to do the p52 project with him.  we’ll both be taking selecting 1 photo each week and talking about the workflow, concept, and anything else that was involved.

this whole week, for me, has been about sharpness.  i recently picked up a nikon d7000 body, which, with it’s ultra hi-fi sensor, can be a little unforgiving in pulling focus, camera shake, etc.

so, i was out at an urban garden today shooting a few shots for an upcoming fundraiser, and i was just trying to nail focus.  every shot had to be tack sharp, and i was also trying to shoot really low to the ground so the viewer would feel almost “lost” in the garden.

one of the plots had a sunflower growing, and i couldn’t resist.

Adding a UILabel to a UIToolbar

leave a comment »

Cause we all need to know how to do this..here’s how you add a UILabel to a UIToolbar, and keep it real at the same time.

NSMutableArray *items = [[self.toolbar items] mutableCopy];

UIBarButtonItem *spacer = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithBarButtonSystemItem:UIBarButtonSystemItemFlexibleSpace target:nil action:nil];
[items addObject:spacer];
[spacer release];

self.titleLabel = [[UILabel alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0.0 , 11.0f, self.view.frame.size.width, 21.0f)];
[self.titleLabel setFont:[UIFont fontWithName:@"Helvetica-Bold" size:18]];
[self.titleLabel setBackgroundColor:[UIColor clearColor]];
[self.titleLabel setTextColor:[UIColor colorWithRed:157.0/255.0 green:157.0/255.0 blue:157.0/255.0 alpha:1.0]];
[self.titleLabel setText:@"Title"];
[self.titleLabel setTextAlignment:UITextAlignmentCenter];

UIBarButtonItem *spacer2 = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithBarButtonSystemItem:UIBarButtonSystemItemFlexibleSpace target:nil action:nil];
[items addObject:spacer2];
[spacer2 release];

UIBarButtonItem *title = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithCustomView:self.titleLabel];
[items addObject:title];
[title release];

Here’s the 2nd ad I’m working on in a branding campaign for Twilight Notes.  Adam has been a great friend for years, and he asked me to help as he’s branching more into music production.  He does great work, and I of course wanted to do the project.  We went out late Sunday night in downtown Fort Lauderdale and did a quick photo shoot.  Kara Starzyk was there too, another great photographer.  Definitely check out her work.

The whole idea behind this campaign is to connect, engage with the music and the listener.  We started out asking, what is Twilight Notes?  It’s hard to pin down, especially when navigating the heavy stereotypes that exist of DJs.  It’s a pop-culture minefield, and we wanted to break out of that mold, but still have a fresh consistent, transcendent message.

As a tastemaker, a music producer needs to remember what makes himself or herself different than Pandora…it’s the human side.  It’s the surprise, but it’s consistent.  We wanted to emphasize that.  This whole campaign is about moments, and what inspires us — how we connect to music, and music connects to us.  Adam always says every moment has a perfect soundtrack.  We’re hard-wired to respond to music and melody.  We wanted to show that energy visually.

I love this ad because we’re using a visual medium to challenge the viewer’s aural sense.  ”Listen to this..”, but you have to look at it.  It’s the essence of this campaign.  It’s more than music.

That’s the difference between just a DJ, and Twilight Notes.  This is gonna be a fun one.  Keep checking back for more.

This is from a mobile campaign I’m working on with my buddies over at Twilight Notes. They’ve got a set of tracks that come out each month for Dialect, that are really good.  One of my new favs is on this month’s.  Spanish Sahara – by the Foals.  You can listen here.
